Caring for Your Teeth Step by Step

ladyflossWithin the quick pace of life, we don’t always adhere to good habits.  Sometimes good habits get cut short or forgotten all together.  Occasionally we need to remind ourselves or find that routine that contributes to our being healthy, wealthy, and wise.

Here are five steps to help with good oral hygiene:

Brushing your teeth at least 2 times a day for 2 minutes.  Think of it as the 2n2 rule.  Typically most people brush when they get up and when they go to bed.  It is ideal to brush after every meal although it is difficult during a rushed lunch break.  Remember that toothpaste alone is not as effective as the act of brushing, so brushing without toothpaste is actually beneficial.

A lot of young people do not floss.  Flossing is a huge contributor to removing particles stuck in between teeth.  Floss can get into the spaces that an average toothbrush cannot.  Tongue scrapers are also an added bonus that can help in good oral hygiene as well as helping to fight bad breath.

Mouthwash helps with fresh breath and leaves a clean taste in your mouth, but it also helps to strengthen tooth enamel.

What you eat is just as important to your mouth as it is your waistline.  Avoid sugary and sticky foods when possible as well as snacking constantly.  Plaque is essentially created every time you eat.  Also limit or avoid drinks that are full of acids.

Lastly, visit your dentist regularly.  You certainly want to visit your dentist if there is anything wrong, however, regular visits can not only keep your mouth in tip top shape, but alert you to issues before they happen.
