Food for Thought: Part 2

Caution: Healthy Mouth at Work

As we discussed in Food for Thought: Part 1, braces are delicate, necessary equipment in making ones smile beautiful for decades.  Those with braces must be cautious when biting as any food that is not soft can threaten braces.  This includes apple slices, corn on the cob, and other such foods that one may forget about before sitting down at the kitchen table.  There is also a soreness from tightening braces which also warrants eating softer foods to reduce irritation.

Do you have problems when you chew?  Sometimes there is soreness and pain associated with chewing that could also result in issues effecting the teeth or gums.  Until you have the opportunity to visit Lake Cities Dental you should restrict the eating of harder foods and stick with softer foods similar to someone with braces.  Eating softer foods also helps when sick or when someone is having trouble with swallowing.  Here is a list of soft foods that you may want to consider:

  • Yogurt
  • Soup
  • Pasta / Noodles
  • Eggs
  • Pudding / Custard
  • Mashed Potatoes
  • Apple Sauce
  • Oatmeal

If you have dry mouth you will want to consult your dentist or doctor and stay away from alcohol and tobacco as well as spicy and salty foods.  Do drink lots of water and be sure to chew sugarless gum as it stimulates saliva flow.  Canker sores have no cure; however, you can reduce the burden by reducing your intake of acidic, spicy, and citrusy foods.
