Your Teeth and Cleaning
Part of great oral hygiene is teeth cleaning. While brushing, flossing, and rinsing properly are essential for everyday oral hygiene, a deeper and thorough cleaning from your dental hygienist is necessary as well. When teeth cleaning or prophylaxis is administered, the procedure is given to remove tartar that may have developed in difficult to reach areas or neglectful areas. Even with daily brushing, places around the teeth can be missed due to routine or a wearing toothbrush. Lack of flossing is also a great contributor.
In-office teeth cleaning consists of scaling and polishing and in some cases, debridement if too much tartar has accumulated on the teeth. Tartar has a tendency to accumulate on younger patients due to the infrequency of their brushing habits. Although treatment may be more frequently given a particular or oral situation, teeth cleaning is typically recommended professionally every six months if not at least every year.
The overall reason for teeth cleaning is to remove plaque that can otherwise lead to cavities, gingivitis, or periodontal disease. Consulting your dentist upon routine examination is the best measure of preventative oral hygiene.
