Diagnosing TMD | A Perio Process
To diagnose TMD, the Mayo clinic staff says a dentist will perform a series of tests that will most likely include:

- Listening to and feeling the jaw as it opens and closes.
- Observing the jaw’s range of motion
- Identifying areas of pain and discomfort along the jaw
Following these tests, your dentist may order X-rays, a CT scan or an MRI in order to see a detailed view of the teeth, jaw bone or joint’s disk.
Diagnosing TMD | Temporomandibular Treatment
Upon receiving a positive diagnosis, your dentist will be able to provide you with a personal treatment plan that is right for you. Though the Mayo staff says that it is sometimes possible for TMDs to heal without treatment, many patients with temporomandibular disorders find relief in the form of medication, therapy or surgical procedures.
